When the lights dimmed last month in the Grand Ballroom of the Brown Palace hotel, a different kind of awards ceremony video was about to begin. The voices of 5 historic preservation awards recipients and 3 lifetime achievement honorees blended together to create something much greater than the sum of their parts. While the audience learned about recently preserved historic structures and the transformational work of preservation leaders, they were also inspired by the power of preservation to reveal unique qualities and character that attract economic vitality to a city.
Historic Denver’s Preservation Awards gala is a remarkable celebration of Denver’s preservation spirit and community. As former mayor Federico Pena says in the film, “Historic Denver has been, I think, one of the most impactful groups in the history of this city.”
Historic preservation generally makes good business sense and it is usually more environmentally friendly than the alternatives, but that’s not the reason we love doing films like this one. There is intrinsic value to knowing how we got to where we are now. Knocking down buildings erases our common past. Breathing new life into those buildings enriches the character of our city.
HaveyPro appreciates the work of Historic Denver and each of the honorees we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know since we began producing films for the Preservation Awards in 2002.
